Adrenaline is no longer compatible with AMD Catalyst Graphics Drivers (aka ATI Proprietary). There! I said it! But it’s not our fault!
The open source community has moved on to bigger and better things and have launched the spanking new XOrg Server v1.16. The AMD Team, meanwhile has fallen behind, and their latest closed source binary does not support this XOrg 1.16. Hence the compatibility issues with Adrenaline.
How will this affect users?
Quite obviously, this only affects users with AMD Graphics Cards. But don’t worry. I don’t think you guys need to go all hysterical with this news. The open source Radeon driver is strong enough to handle your daily tasks effectively. It can play HD Video and handle the Gnome Compositions with aplomb! No problems there!
It is, however, a big issue if you wish to install Steam Client and start gaming. In this situation, there is no alternative to the proprietary driver, I’m afraid. Gaming performance will take the hit and as of now, I haven’t found a solution…
But I want to game!
Well, use Synergy! That baby works well with absolutely anything you may throw at it!
So what do you suggest?
Adrenaline in no way is a bad product. It’s fantastic. And if gaming is not on your lists, Adrenaline is wonderful to be used on a daily basis! I think you should go for it.
Namaste!
